Walks your kids will love
From tram rides to waterfalls to hidden fairy doorways, there are endless trail activities to get amongst that will work for the whole family around the Wellington region.
Horoeka Reserve
For something a bit more immersive, Horoeka Reserve in Stokes Valley is the perfect spot. Aptly named Fairy Forest, the trail is filled with miniature doorways strategically placed along the path, perfect for keeping the kiddies entertained. But don’t worry, this trails’ beauty will definitely be enough to satisfy an adult’s nature fix too with stunning giant trees and leafy canopies!
Otari-Wilton’s Bush
Got kids interested in native flora and fauna? Or perhaps want to learn more yourself? Look no further than Otari-Wilton’s bush, the only botanic garden in New Zealand whose sole focus is helping native plants thrive. The flat pathway along the bottom section of the Circular Walk is suitable for prams and young kids, meaning you can bring the whole family along (park at the Churchill Drive car park).
For the more intrepid, take the Blue Trail to find the 800-year-old Rimu Tree. There are coin operated gas barbeques for a picnic on the Troop Lawn. Just a 15-minute drive from the central city, this trail may just become your next go to on a nice day, this whole area is very sheltered even in high winds.
Percy Scenic Reserve
Looking for a classic kiwi park experience with a twist? Percy Scenic Reserve has you sorted with beautiful picnic spots and a pond full of ducks. Once you’ve watched the cute birds splash around, don’t forget to head up one of the trails to the waterfall, or check out the cave weta’s in the cave! Pack a lunch, bring a frisbee and some sunscreen and make a day of this one because you won’t want to leave!
Queen Elizabeth Park, Paraparaumu
Queen Elizabeth Park offers something for everyone, so bring the whole family and you are sure not to be disappointed. Once you’ve walked one of the many trails, take your pick from the various activities on offer. Horse riding? Check. Swimming at the beach? Check. There’s even a Tramway Museum that offers tram rides through the park all year long.
Queen Elizabeth Park, Masterton
Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton not only shares the same name as the Park above, but also its sheer variety of activities to choose from. Not only is it pram friendly, but you can bring your kids to the huge playground, walk across the swing bridge to see deer, play mini golf, and of course, enjoy one of the many trails on offer, among other things. There’s even a miniature train ride for your kids!
Spicer Link
Although almost 3kms, this trail within Te Ara a Rangituhi Park is perfect for the whole family. It weaves through the Porirua bush, leading walkers on an hour-long journey filled with beautiful views of the forest. Head down to Spicer Link to see what else is in store!
