Waikanae River Trail

One of the more popular tracks within the Kāpiti region, the Waikanae River Trail offers something for everyone, whether walking, horse riding, biking or even taking a dip in the river to cool off! It’s an easy track that can be completed in small sections or all together, taking a few hours. Although flat, this trail packs a punch in scenery.

Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve

Covering 30ha of native forest, Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of kohekohe forest in New Zealand and features sweeping views of Kapiti Island and the Kāpiti coastline to the south.

There are numerous walking and tramping tracks of various lengths and difficulty, including the easy Kohekohe Walk, the steep bush-walk Parata Track, or the more challenging tramping track, Te Au Track.

Kapiti Island Nature Reserve

Feel like an adventure? Head to Kapiti Island for a day full of hiking and picnicking. Encounter some of New Zealand’s most endangered native species who live predator-free in this remote area. The island is only accessible through official tour boat excursions that set out once a day so don’t forget to book in advance because it sells out fast!

Escarpment Track

Get away from the city for one of the best trails Wellington has to offer. Dubbed the “Stairway to Heaven,” the Escarpment Track zigs and zags above State Highway 1 with its challenging but rewarding 1,200 steps. It offers a unique trail experience in the form of swing bridges and spectacular views of Kāpiti Island. Pack the essentials and make a day of this 9km track. Te Ara O Whareroa

Just one hour from Wellington and reachable by train and car, Te Ara O Whareroa trail in Queen Elizabeth Park may just be your next go to on a nice day. Bordered by striking beaches and dunes, this easy trail appeals to all fitness levels and uses – from walkers and bikers to dogs. Visitors can join at multiple points along the two-hour trail such as from Wellington Road, Whareroa Beach and Raumati Beach. Grab your sunnies and soak up the sunshine!
